1 convicted, 2 sentenced in separate South Florida identity theft-tax fraud cases

MIAMI — One man has been convicted and two others sentenced to prison in the latest round of South Florida identity theft and income tax fraud cases.

Authorities say Miami and surrounding cities have long led the nation in this type of fraud.

A federal jury on Friday convicted 35-year-old Paul Borgella of North Miami Beach for his role in a scam that obtained $400,000 in fraudulent income tax refunds. Borgello could get up to 10 years in prison at sentencing in December.

Earlier last week, 30-year-old Josue Pierre of Miami was sentenced to more than two years in prison for a tax refund scheme using prepaid debit cards and 24-year-old Dines Blanc of North Miami Beach got over three years for a $300,000 fraud using 16 fake tax returns.
