DMV issues consumer alert on identity theft

DMV
4/20/2007 – WATERBURY — The Department of Motor Vehicles has been monitoring issues connected to the theft of driver license numbers from the TJX Companies.

It advises license holders affected by this theft that a number of state and federal laws protect them from having their personal information falsely used to obtain a Connecticut driver’s license.

The DMV is making this announcement in advance of a letter that TJX plans to send next week to 10,000 customers in Connecticut regarding the theft of their driver license numbers from TJX’s computer files.

The company notified 18,000 consumers in Connecticut in a March 30 letter and plans next week to re-send the letter to 10,000 of the original number to advise them of additional credit protection opportunities.

The DMV has created a special Web page concerning this information. It can be found at www.ct.gov/dmv
