Ex Florida Corrections Officer Pleads Guilty To ID Theft

Bernard Beliard, a former state corrections officer, pled guilty to fraud and aggravated identity theft, following prosecutors charges of stealing the personal info of over 800 inmates at the South Florida Regional Center, reports the Miami Herald.

Beliard admitted that he had used his authority to swipe the Social Security numbers and dates of birth of prisoners housed at the facility from October 2012 to January 2013.

He subsequently sold it to an undercover FBI informant, whom he thought was using it to commit income tax refund fraud. Prosecutors say that he took $9,600 for the names.

Beliard was fired from his job on March 7; he’s scheduled for sentencing on July 16 in federal court in Miami, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Beliard will receive a minimum mandatory sentence of two years for identity theft.
