| 8/19/2007 – A former hospital employee has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for identity theft and bank fraud, the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s office announced today.
Nicole Jenise Stevenson, 25, of Baltimore, began working at Harbor Hospital in June 2005, where she had access to patients’ confidential information and Social Security numbers. According to prosecutors, between September 2005 and March 2006, Stevenson used the name and Social Security number of a patient without the patient’s consent to fraudulently obtain credit and purchase more than $61,000 of items in the patient’s name.
Prosecutors also said that between April 2005 and March 2006, Stevenson used the Social Security numbers of other individuals, false Social Security numbers and false employment verifications to fraudulently obtain loans for seven vehicles, writing checks on accounts that she knew had insufficient funds. She also fraudulently obtained bank and finance company loans to purchase vehicles, defrauding the institutions of more than $107,000, authorities said.
Stevenson, who pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft, received a sentence of 25 months in prison followed by seven months of home detention, the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s office said. U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett also ordered Stevenson to pay restitution of $123,073.63.
