Florida man sentenced for identity theft

A 23-year-old Florida man who pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to defraud the United States owes more than $400,000 in restitution and will spend more than four years in prison.

United States District Judge Karen E. Schreier sentenced Charlie Frank Adams to 30 months in prison on the conspiracy charge and a consecutive sentence of 24 years for identity theft on Jan. 17. Adams was ordered to pay the Internal Revenue Service and his victims $421,832.83.

Adams and 10 others were accused of scheming to defraud the United States by using personal identifying information to file bogus income tax returns claiming refunds were owed. The IRS paid fraudulent claims of over $400,000 before the fraud was discovered.
