Florida leads nation in fraud complaints

Florida ranks first in the country in the number of fraud complaints last year, with nearly 1,000 complaints per 100,000 people

A large population of older residents who are considered more vulnerable to scams and a great number of foreclosures are among the reasons for the state’s number of fraud complaints, according to 24/7 Wall St., which based its statistics on information in the Federal Trade Commission’s annual Consumer Sentinel Report.

Identity theft was the most common complaint nationwide, with filing false government documents such as tax returns the most widespread form of identity theft and a major problem in the Tampa Bay area.
Of the 40,000 complaints of identity theft statewide last year, more than half involved government documents and benefits. Florida had the most identity theft complaints in the country in 2012.
