Former retirement services company worker gets 6 years in ID theft, tax fraud case

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida — A former worker at the TIAA-CREF retirement services company has been sentenced to six years in federal prison in an identity theft and tax fraud scheme.

The sentence was imposed Monday by a Fort Lauderdale federal judge on Tobin Lamar Lyon II of Charlotte, North Carolina Lyon and 27-year-old Jeffrey Alexander Martin of Florida previously pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft charges.

Lyon worked at TIAA-CREF, which specializes in retirement services for people who work in academic, research and cultural fields. Prosecutors say Lyon stole some 500 identities for the scheme, which were then used to claim more than $304,000 in fraudulent tax returns.

Martin is scheduled to be sentenced in February.
