Former South Miami Hospital worker pleads guilt to identity theft
A former employee of South Miami Hospital pled guilty to stealing the identities of hundreds of patients for a tax refund fraud scheme.
Betty Cole, of Miami, pled guilty to aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to possess 15 or more unauthorized access devices. She will be sentenced on Sept. 23 and could face up to seven years in prison.
According to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Cole used her job as a respiratory therapist at South Miami Hospital to give personal information of patients to Alci Bonannee, who used them to file fraudulent tax returns. Cole allegedly received money in exchange.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael N. Berger is prosecuting the case.
