Georgia ranked second in identity theft complaints
Identify theft is on the rise in Georgia and the use of social media may be partly blamed for the spike.
A recently released study by a group that researches consumer behavior and financial trends reports that unsafe use of social media has played a role in the Federal Trade Commission’s data that ranks the state of Georgia as second in the nation for identity theft complaints.
The study, by Javelin Strategy and Research of Pleasanton, Calif., found that unsafe use of social media includes posting birth dates, pet names and “other seemingly innocent information online that can be used by identify thieves.”
The data from the Federal Trade Commission ranked Georgia as having the second highest number of identity theft complaints in 2011. Florida is number one.
