Identity Theft Legislation Passes

Identity Theft Legislation Passes

It took less than a minute Friday for the Florida Senate to pass legislation to curb identity fraud.

Now the bill is headed to the Governor.

The legislation was drafted in response to news reports that police were arresting people carrying dozens of IDs that don’t belong to them, but had to let them go because just having the information isn’t illegal.

Senator Arthenia Joyner filed the bill criminalizing possession of other people’s IDs.

“The possession of personal ID for five or more persons will be a third degree felony,” said Joyner.

The legislation makes exceptions for parents, teachers and other workers with legitimate reasons to carry other people’s ID.
