Identity Thief Thwarted at Navy Federal Credit Union

When a woman attempted to withdraw a large amount of cash Jan. 23 from the Navy Federal Credit Union at 10129 Jefferson Davis Hwy., staff there became suspicious of her story and her credentials.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to investigate. “The woman — Katrina Latrice Barksdale — was in possession of a fake Florida driver’s license with the name of an identify theft victim,” said Capt. Jeff Pearce.

Barksdale had allegedly used fraudulent identification to open a local account in the name of the identity theft victim. “She had also obtained fraudulent credentials, identifying her as an employee of a local business,” Pearce said.

“The original account holder’s bank was contacted in Florida and they confirmed that the account being set up by Barksdale was fraudulent and the result of identity theft,” Pearce said.

“As a result of quick thinking and further investigation on the part of the bank employees and deputies, a serious identity thief was thwarted in her efforts to wipe out the life savings of the victim in Florida,” Sheriff Roger Harris said.

Barksdale was charged with three counts of fraud by false pretenses and three counts of identity fraud and forgery. She was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
