Records and Information Management Month

Records and Information Management Month – Through better organization and maintaining accurate records it becomes easier to not only manage information but also protect it.

Here at Legal Shred, we are committed to helping businesses and the public keep their private information safe and out of the hands of fraudsters. During the month of April, we are celebrating National Records and Information Management Month to bring awareness to ways businesses can improve data protection efforts.

Businesses are key targets for identity and data theft so it is critical that they have a plan in place for all employees to follow when it comes to protecting the information that crosses through their doors.

Through better organization and maintaining accurate records it becomes easier to not only manage information but also to protect it.

A Brief History

The Association of Records Managers and Administrators first recognized this with a one day event back in 1995 to highlight the need to renew the US Paperwork Reduction Act. By 1997 it became a week-long event about the need to keep proper records in business and then by 2003 was a month of festivities centered on the cause which we now celebrate on a global level.

Organization

Records can be any documents – from paper print outs to invoices, e-mails,  video, or other types of files and materials used in business transactions and communications. In many industries it’s the law to keep an accurate history of these from the time they’re created until they’re destroyed or stored. The only way to keep this process organized and precise is to have a plan in place that all must follow for records filing and disposal.

Compliance and Security

Of course we cannot ignore the role that information management plays in keeping data secure and also meeting all compliance requirements for a specific industry. This month sheds light on the need to establish best practices for your workplace, provide training for employees and ensure policies are being withheld at all times.

Clean Up

Finally, as we put a focus on better records keeping, it goes hand in hand with clearing out old files in the process. Legal Shred is here to be your ally in this portion of things. As you do a deep cleaning for all of your records we’re on standby waiting to shred the no longer needed records and data into unrecognizable pieces so no one can have access to them once you’re done.
