South Florida woman gets 7 years in prison for identity theft scheme

Miami Gardens resident Providencia Llanos was sentenced to 81 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for an identity theft and tax fraud scheme involving over 3,000 people.

Llanos, 36, was also ordered to pay nearly $43,000 in restitution.

In March 2014, agents conduct a warranted search of Llanos’ home and found prepaid debit cards and computers in addition to lists and notebooks full of personal identifying information such as dates of birth and social security numbers. Llanos’ home contained at least 3,192 personal identities.

Eighty-six tax returns also were reportedly filed from an IP address at Llanos’ home using the stolen personal IDs.

Llanos, a former tax preparer for Jackson Hewitt in Miramar, is also the subject of a 2009 tax fraud case for which she was sentenced to one to seven years of supervised probation and ordered to pay $15,758 in restitution, according to a court document.
