If your mail is stolen, your identity could be stolen as well, and that’s troubling some Northeast San Antonio residents after a rash of mail thefts.

Amanda Scheel must drive all the way to the Northeast Post Office Annex three miles away to pick up her mail.

The community mailboxes in her Larkspur neighborhood still bead the scars of a recent break-in by crooks who made off with people’s mail — and possibly their identities.

“These people have stolen people’s checks. You know, if you have your routing numbers and your bank account number is on there. If you get pre-approved credit card offers, those are gone. Start checking your credit report,” Scheel said.

The community mailboxes are designed, in part, to keep the mail safer. But thieves are learning that by breaking one lock, they have access to several people’s mail.

The U.S. Postal Service says mail theft is growing — not just here, but nationally.

San Antonio Postal Inspectors are now working with police on a recent rash of mail thefts here. In the meantime, they’re cautioning people to be extra wary.

Authorities say if your mail is stolen, you should take the necessary steps to prevent your identity from being stolen.
